The New York Red Bulls acquired goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul from the Colorado Rapids for allocation money, signed him immediately to a Major League Soccer contract, and immediately released goalkeeper Jon Conway.
Conway was 1-7-1 this season with the Red Bulls and had a 1.78 goals against average. In 2008, he started a career-high 28 games, had a 1.50 GAA and had seven shutouts. But he also become one of the first players in league history to be suspended 10 games for violating the league's substance abuse policy by using performance-enhancing drugs.
Coundoul was signed by the Rapids in 2005 but saw no first team action that season. He made up for it in the last three seasons, going 17-22-12 with a 1.15 GAA, the second-best all-time average in league history for a goalkeeper who has played a minimum of 4,000 minutes.
