PASL Pro Ends League Meetings In Las Vegas

The Professional Arena Soccer League, entering its second season in 2009-10, held their latest owners meeting Thursday and Friday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Among the league news from the meetings...

- The league accepted the folding of the Colorado Lightning.

- The San Diego Sockers and Colorado Cavaliers were accepted for the 2009-10 season. Eight other potential franchises that could join either this season or next season made presentations and now must meet a series of conditions by a deadline date to be considered for expansion.

- Based on the fact they had the best regular season record in the PASL's debut season, 1790 Cincinnati will host the 2010 PASL North American Championship. They lost to the Stockton Cougars for the inaugural title at Stockton Arena.

- 1790 Cincinnati head coach Craig Rhodis will serve as head coach for the US National Arena Soccer Team for the next two seasons, replacing fired Cougars head coach Bernie Lilavois.

In news involving league play next season...

- Goalkeepers will be required to wear traditional indoor long pants extending below the knee.

- The automatic penalty for having four individual fouls in a half has been ended.

- All defensive penalties in the goalkeeper's arc will now result in a shootout, not a penalty kick, but PKs will remain used for severe fould of players attempting a shootout goal.

- Individual penalties will no longer count towards a team's foul count.

- Team fouls will now carry over into the second half of games, instead of starting fresh, and teams will still earn a two-minute penalty for six fouls. Foul counts will be wiped clean, though, in games going into overtime.

- All unexpired penalties will end at the start of overtime.

- Players serving a five-minute misconduct penalty will be released from the penalty box upon the first whistle after penalty time has run out.

- The game clock will not stop on all whistles and be started when the ball is restarted and play is live.
