Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored both of his team's goals and regained the lead in the race for the Golden Boot as the defending Major League Soccer champion Columbus Crew extended their unbeaten streak Sunday to nine games (4-0-5) in a 2-1 victory over Chivas USA at Crew Stadium.
Andy Gruenbaum assisted on Schelotto's 61st minute goal and Gino Padula did so on his 87th minute point and Schelotto now has 10 goals in the scoring race.
Columbus is 12-0-5 at home since June 7, 2008.
Eduardo Lillingston had an unassisted goal in the 39th minute to give Chivas the early lead, but the once strong Western Conference team has now lost their last two games and three of their last four to fall into a tie for the conference lead and the best record in MLS with the Houston Dynamo. Chivas is 8-3-3 with 27 points and Houston is 8-2-3.
Columbus next faces FC Dallas on the road Saturday while Chivas welcomes the Los Angeles Galaxy to their shared home, The Home Depot Center, July 4.
