The Richmond Kickers of the United Soccer Leagues Second Division announced Tuesday midfielder Chris Carrieri has come out of retirement and signed a deal to play for the rest of the season.
He makes his return to the Kickers Tuesday when they face the Carolina RailHawks of the USL First Division at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, NC in a first round match for the 2009 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
Carrieri was on Richmond's 2005 USL2 finalist team and their 2006 league championship squad, He has eight goals and 11 assists in his Kickers career, leading the team and the league in assists in 2006 and was named to the USL2 All-League Team that season.
He last played in the USL with the RailHawks, assisting on three goals in 28 games of the 2007 season.
The number one overall pick in the 2001 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, Carrieri played three seasons with the Colorado Rapids before joining the Rochester Rhinos in USL1 for the 2004 season, where he had eight goals and eight assists for 24 points over 2,249 minutes played.
A graduate of North Carolina, Carrieri was the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year and the 2000 Player of the Year. In 2000, he led the conference in almost every offensive category and was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas NCAA Division I All-American Team.
He was also named to the All-ACC Team in his junior and senior seasons, was a three-time ACC Player of the Week and a Soccer America Team of the Week member four times.
