Montero Gets Named First MLS POW Of Season

Forward Fredy Montero, who scored the first and third goals of the expansion Seattle Sounders FC's season in a 3-0 win over the New York Red Bulls Thursday night at Qwest Field in Seattle on the opening night of the 2009 Major League Soccer season, was named Monday the league's first Player of the Week for the season.

Montero's first goal, scored in the game's 12th minute, is also one of eight nominees for Sierra Mist Goal of the Week, voted by fans at www.mlsnet.com.

Montero also assisted on Brad Evans' goal in the victory.

Acquired by Seattle in January on loan from Colombia's Deportivo Cali, he spent the last two seasons leading the Copa Mustang league in goals -- 2007 with 13 for Atletico Huila and last season with 16 for Cali.
